L1 Snapshot #1

Knowledge Hub Women Coaches Posters.jpg

Our inaugural snapshot at Level One Sports & Entertainment has been developed with the aim of raising awareness about the current landscape of coaches in women’s sports. We would love to see more athletes selecting the coaching pathway when they retire, and we hope this snapshot positively contributes to impacting this trend.

Level One collected data for 2018 - 2019 from various women’s professional, semiprofessional and amateur leagues, as well as global women’s national team competitions, that had publicly available information regarding the gender of the participating head coaches. We focused on the team sports of soccer, basketball, netball, volleyball and softball.

We celebrate the qualified men and women coaching women’s teams, as we believe the ultimate goal is for players to receive the best possible expertise and coaching in order to further professionalize these sports. At the same time, with the exception of netball, the majority of head coaches for the women’s teams analyzed in this snapshot are men.

While this fact may or may not hold true if a comprehensive study of all women’s teams is completed, it is still reasonable to conclude that there is much room for growth for women to become head coaches of women’s teams at the top level.
